 Ruth Winter

(1914 – 2011)

When a small group broke away from the Good Companions in 1958 to create Medway Little Theatre, its charismatic leader was undoubtedly Duncan Rand. His partner in the enterprise and its intellectual powerhouse was Ruth Winter, who died peacefully on Boxing Day at the grand age of 97.

One word describes Ruth: formidable. She either appeared in or directed most of our early productions. The terror of technicians, she both amused and annoyed actors by coming round with notes during and after every performance. On at least one occasion she brought notes backstage on the last night of the run. Her strict discipline and uncompromising standards meant that not everyone warmed to her, but her passion for and commitment to the theatre made her universally respected.

Ruth’s day-job was Head of English and later Headmistress at the then Christchurch School for Girls. She was inspirational, extraordinarily generous with her time and encouragement for pupils and protégés. She continued working with children in the west-country village she retired to until into her 90s.

Nobody who knew Ruth will ever forget her. Formidable!
